• What does a speech & language therapist do?
Speech and Language Therapists assess, diagnose, and treat individuals with a wide range of communication difficulties.
• Can I see a private speech & language therapist at the same time as an HSE speech & language therapist?
Yes, clients have the right to simultaneously access speech and language therapy from public and private service providers.
• Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No, you can contact the private practice directly with any communication concerns. However, GP referrals are also accepted.
• How do I know if a speech and language therapist is fully qualified?
All speech and language therapists working in the Republic of Ireland are required to be registered with CORU.
• What if I am on the wait list for a HSE service?
Sharing any previous assessments, reports, or therapist contact details can help ensure a seamless treatment programme.
• Is there a need for my child to have an assessment?
Yes. All children require an assessment before starting therapy. An assessment allows the therapist to gain a clear understanding of your child’s communication abilities, strengths, and areas of need. It marks the beginning of the therapeutic relationship and helps guide appropriate goal setting and intervention planning.
• Can I get reimbursed for any part of the cost?
If you have private health insurance, you may be able to claim partial reimbursement depending on your level of cover. Simply request a receipt of payment from your Speech and Language Therapist, which you can submit to your insurer. You may also be able to claim partial reimbursement through your annual tax return.
